Mary Elizabeth Smith Neal, affectionately known as Maeliz to those who cherished her, passed away on May 30, 2024, at the age of 75 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. Born on December 6, 1948, in Tupelo to Willie James Smith, Sr. and Mary Christine Miller Smith, Mary spent her life as a beloved member of her community.
Maeliz was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her two daughters, Kimberly Smith of Tupelo and Stephanie Smith of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters, Lena Ashby and Victoria Ashby, both of Tupelo; and three brothers, Steve Clifton, Anthony Middlebrooks, and Steve Orr, all of Tupelo. Her legacy continues through her six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews, who will always remember her warmth and kindness.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Neal; her son, Irving D. Smith; her daughter, Clara Denise Smith; her sister, Barbara Dale Smith; her brothers, Willie James Smith, Jr. "Putlam" and Mitchell L. Smith; her grandfathers, Hyrum Miller and Doc Blair; her grandmothers, Willie Lee Miller and Clara Samples Smith; and her Aunt Ruby Carpenter.
Mary's passions in life included cooking, babysitting, dancing, and listening to Michael Jackson's music. Her generosity and care for others were evident in all she did, and she always upheld the values of righteousness and compassion.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at 1:00 P.M. at Associated Family Funeral Home in Tupelo, MS. A wake will begin at 11:00 A.M. on the same day at the funeral home. Associated Family Funeral Home is honored to serve the Smith and Neal family during this time of need.
Mary Elizabeth Smith Neal, Maeliz, will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit and love will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
