Margie Sawyer Obituary

Margie Leigh Merrel Sawyer, a beloved mother, daughter, sister, and grandmother, passed away on October 25, 2023 at the age of 65, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born on November 15, 1957, in New Jersey to her parents Forrest Merrel and Margie Young.

Margie was a cherished mother to her sons, Roger Pankow (Andrea) of Baldwyn, MS and Kevin Pankow of Long Beach, CA, who meant the world to her and to whom she meant the world. She was the loving daughter of her father, Forrest Merrel of Owasso, OK.  Her sisters, Jeana Lonzo of Kuna, ID and Cindy Davenport of Gerlach, NV, as well as her brother Rocky Merrel of Corinth, MS, shared an unbreakable, enduring bond with their sister, Margie, and they will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.

Margie also leaves behind her two precious granddaughters, Alyssa and Lola, who brought immense joy and happiness to her life. She could not have been prouder of the strong, talented women that they have become.  They will forever carry their grandmother’s sense of strength and independence with them throughout the trials and tribulations of their lives.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Margie Young, and her sister Sharron Merrel Morgan.

Margie found unconditional love and happiness in the company of her faithful little dog, Snowball.  A woman of many interests and hobbies, she was a talented artist who loved drawing pictures.  She created many drawings that she shared with friends, family, and even local businesses.  She enjoyed working on puzzles, watching game shows and movies, and listening to all kinds of music – interests she shared with both of her sons. Margie also liked spending time outdoors fishing and growing vegetables in her garden, which she was always very proud to share.  Mostly, she found joy in the simple things life has to offer – like sitting on her porch just to watch hummingbirds feed for hours on end.

Margie Leigh Merrel Sawyer will be remembered for her warmth, her love, and her vibrant spirit. She touched the lives of many with her kindness and left a lasting mark on the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. Though she has departed from this world, her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, even in the ordinary moments.

Margie's legacy is one of love, laughter, and the beauty she brought into the world. May she rest in eternal peace, and may her family find comfort in the cherished memories they shared with her.  May her new journey be filled with calmness and contentment for a life well lived and for the immeasurable love that she provided.

The family will honor Margie’s life with a private celebration of life service at her son’s home.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations in her name be made to Tupelo - Lee Humane Society, P.O. Box 2143, Tupelo, MS 38803
